The wonderful Newspapers Digitisation Project at the National Library have started scanning again (presumably got more money). During May 51,000 pages were processed, accepted and uploaded to beta! Currently they are working on the South Australian Advertiser (1901-1919) then the remainder of the Argus (to 1945). This will be followed by the Brisbane Courier (1900-1933). By the end of the year they are also hoping to have done the Courier Mail (to 1954), the Queenslander (1866-1939) and the Sydney Morning Herald (1831 – 1954). For the full list go to:

Scanning has been continuing at the Australian Newspapers beta service (http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home). Of particular interest is the scanning of early runs of newspapers. For example, The Courier Mail (and its antecedent publications) is now scanned from inception in 1846 to 1899, and then 1934-1935. This is great for those researching the early years in Australia.
The Australian Newspapers beta service now contains 367,000 newspaper pages from 26 different newspaper titles dating from 1803-1954, providing access to over 3.5 million newspaper articles. The National Library is currently undertaking a procurement process to establish a panel of digital scanning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) contractors for ongoing newspaper digitisation activites. During this period no additional content will be added to the Beta service.

On 25 July 2008, the National Library of Australia launched the Australian Newspapers Beta service which makes available out-of-copyright digitised Australian newspapers. This exciting new online service enables the full-text searching of newspapers published in each state and territory from the 1800s to the mid-1950s. http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au
The Australian Newspapers Beta service already contains over 90,000 newspaper pages from 1803 onwards, with more pages being added daily. The Brisbane Courier is there (1864-1881) – as well as the Courier Mail (1933-34). More will be coming.
